Ben Reierson

I joined Avanade in 2004 as a developer in the Midwest, and transferred to Seattle in 2008 to join our Innovation and Incubation team. My recent dev experience has focused on mobile, XAML and NUI tech such as Surface and Kinect. I look to find new uses for Microsoft technology that will help Avanade continue its rapid growth. I also work closely with the Accenture and Avanade Solutions Showcase developing and presenting demonstrations. I spend most of my free time divided between travel, video games, high-end audio, skiing, and combinations thereof.

My Windows 8 Desktop Experience

I’ve been exclusively using Windows 8 as my desktop operating system for a full six months now. It started as an experiment after attending the Microsoft BUILD conference, where I received a Samsung Series 7 slate with Windows 8 Developer Preview. Even though this was a very early version of Windows 8, it was usable [...]

Kinect for Windows Is Ready

Microsoft Kinect is a full-fledged phenomenon now. Not only was it the fastest selling new consumer gadget in history, but it’s now officially moved beyond gaming with the Kinect for Windows hardware and SDK. As I stated in the video, everyone prefers a different mix of devices, capabilities and form-factors. Some people [...]

Ultrabooks are Laptops!

CES is almost upon us and I keep seeing tech blogs and articles hailing 2012 as the year of the Ultrabook. I find this tech ‘trend’ particularly annoying because there is really nothing new here. The Ultrabook is just a marketing term invented by hardware vendors to describe the latest thin laptops. They are trying [...]

When Do We Use Certain Consumer Devices?

These days we’re seeing new device form-factors pop up quite often; Ultrabooks, 7-inch tablets, smartphones with 5″ screens, Windows slates, etc. There are a lot of choices when it comes to deciding what device to use, especially since you likely have more than one available at any given time. Do you want to respond to [...]

How is a smartphone like a lamp?

It’s well established that people increasingly want to use their personal devices for work. It’s the primary force driving this Consumerization of IT trend everyone is talking about. The impact of this trend on everything from back-end infrastructure to employee work habits is definitely huge, but also not fully understood. So I thought it would [...]

And the BYOD Debate Rages On…

The issue at hand “Should employees be allowed to use their own device for work?”  Serving as the central question for a Wall Street Journal article published this morning, contributors weighed in on both sides of the debate surrounding the consumerization of IT.  It is undeniable that this is an issue which IT departments will [...]
