Business Situation

Advent Software is in the process of targeting its product line to high-end customers. To attract these customers, the company needed to move its software to the next level – improving performance, scalability, and the ability to hold large amounts of data. The company is beginning the migration to .NET with an accounting product that eliminates redundant data entry, increases responsiveness to partner inquiries, handles more frequent break periods, and meets complex reporting requirements. The application had been built on MS Access and had become difficult to manage because of the large amounts of business logic.

Avanade recommended migrating this Access-based application to a component-based architecture using Visual Studio .NET and SQL Server 2000. These technologies would increase the flexibility and scalability, make the application easier to support as new functionality requirements are established, and allow the product to be used at organizations with a large user base. After Avanade establishes the base architectural components, Avanade consultants will begin the next phase of the project, which involves migrating the business functionality of the product.
