PCL Constructors

Business Situation

PCL Constructors has a corporate-wide goal to secure zero incidence of injury for all construction projects. Today, they employ over 50 safety inspectors that are deployed to individual construction sites to report upon each construction project’s safety alignment as well as incidences. Previously, the individual safety inspectors tracked incidences via paper and then manually entered this data into an excel spreadsheet. The organization found that they were losing track of information, and were very limited with the way they reported metrics. They wanted to be able to track and report metrics from site-to-site, by district as well as for the entire corporation.

Solution

Avanade is creating a separate safety management system using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 to track inspection and incident reports as a means to enable PCL Constructors a system to document their organization’s solid safety record. The application will be designed, built and deployed by Avanade using Visual Studio 2005, InfoPath, Reporting Services w/SQL Server 2005 and approval path on top of forms using BizTalk 2004. The application will be deployed in early 2006 to over 50 Tablet PCs. The PCL Constructors IT team worked with Avanade to select Visual Studio 2005 for this application due in part to new features for client application as well as the timesaving features of .NET 2.0 and VS2005.

Results

  • Elimination of paper-based safety management system and the limited functionality and automation of a spreadsheets
  • Improved safety metrics across all construction sites; ability to analyze metrics per site as opposed to district or corporation
  • Improved reporting of Zero incidence
