Business Situation
In May 2001, RTE initiated the migration of their existing Windows 3.x and Novell infrastructure to a Windows NT 4 based infrastructure. The pace of deployment was slower than had been anticipated with only 2 of the 6 concerned French areas deployed by December 2000.
Solution
Avanade was asked to take over the role of national and regional deployment co-ordination. Avanade broke the project into 3 phases:
- Month 1: After auditing of the deployment already completed, Avanade made recommendations on the methodology, the organization and the planning necessary for the national deployment.
- Month 2 to Month 5: Preparation of the deployment methodology; detailed project planning, and technical readiness work (eg automation of application installation, deployment method for sites with less than 30 PCs etc).
- Month 5 to Month 7: Deployment, with Avanade responsible for National and Area deployment coordination and technical support for the deployment coordination team; and development and maintenance of the installation program.
Results
- Successful deployment within the planning timeframe and resource commitments of RTE
- New architecture for small sites (<30 desktops) and delivery in the timeframe of a new optimized method for small sites
- Delivery of a new robust applications installation program
- Improved methodology and support for the teams performing the deployment in the regions including training and associated tools
- Replacement of old workstations in order to simplify logistics and reduce timeframes
