The AFL collaborates with numerous business partners including AFL clubs, state associations, regional game development officers, umpires and game officials, the media, sponsors, and merchandise licensees. Existing communication mechanisms were slow, cumbersome and problematic. The AFL received a high number of repetitive calls regarding routine matters such as current rules and regulations and game information (venue logistics etc). This was exacerbated by confusion as to the content and location of the latest versions of various documents. An example included the provision of weekly performance feedback to geographically diverse national field umpires. The existing process included cutting video tapes and sending them via express post to the various umpires.
