Business Situation

In December 2004, the CEO of Fortis asked the Performance management community to build an enhanced Management Information System (MIS) to support the monthly performance reviews with Fortis’ top management for all Business lines.

To achieve this objective, the Performance Management Office has involved the Performance Management community in an intensive and collaborative process since early January 2004, starting with:

• A pragmatic inventory of all available relevant business information
• Design of comprehensive dashboards for each Business line of the organization

Since March, each Business line computes, collects and consolidates data from different horizons (Financial, marketing, operational, people…) and reports/discusses the evolution on a monthly basis with Business CEO, Fortis CEO, CFO and Deputy CEO. This process is mainly manual and requires intensive workload.

The objective of the MIS Automation project is to deploy an appropriate solution in terms of technology platform, processes and organization to facilitate collection, storage and computation of the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) at different levels within in the organization, based upon the user requirements of Performance Management and Business Lines themselves.

Solution
Avanade deployed a complete and flexible Business Performance Management solution based on Microsoft SQL 2005 Business Intelligence suite, Microsoft Business Scorecard 2005 and Excel Reporting ad-hoc tools.

This solution is supported by a collaborative and data management front portal based on .NET 2 and Windows SharePoint Services.

Results

• Improvement of the Performance Management reporting process
• Availability, harmonization and quality of key indicators within the Fortis organization allowing relevant comparison of figures across Business Lines
• Reduction of lead-time for availability of KPIs allowing the top management to take appropriate actions & decisions as early as possible in the month
