​Business Situation
Within the healthcare industry, the electronic medical record (EMR) is an important application used to create unified patient records.  This particular client had a custom EMR application created back in 2001 using VB6, Web Services, COM, and SOAP technologies. Although, these technologies were advanced tools in their day, this healthcare provider felt it was time to bring its legacy EMR application up to date.

Solution
Avanade re-architected the client’s legacy EMR app and migrated it to the .NET platform using a SOA-based architecture. Prior to the migration, Avanade spent three months developing a reference architecture. The project used a number of Avanade assets, including ACA.NET 4.1, the Avanade Development Architecture, and ACA Lifecycle. It also adopted the Avanade Connected Method for delivery. In addition, Avanade assisted the client in creating a “Software Factory” comprised of 15-30 developers who will maintain the custom app following its refresh.

Results
Work on the project began February 2006. By early 2007, this hospital had a fully updated EMR system for tracking patient records. The new system is more efficient and easier to manage. It also integrates research and clinical data more seamlessly, improves patient care, and saves the institution considerable cost.
