Business Situation

Deutsche Telekom is one of Europe’s largest integrated telecommunication companies. Deutsche Telekom wanted its operations portal to serve as a central platform for a host of services:

  • Business process management
     
  • Hosting platform for custom web applications

The Products & Innovation division’s objective is to automate IT services for its customers and to advance the continuous optimization of IT services. This also includes adapting the requirement and change management processes.

Solution

The operations portal is designed as a web application platform, with standardized web application integration. Avanade developed the portal on Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server® 2007, with integrated business intelligence and business process management solutions. Avanade enhanced the workflow capabilities of SharePoint with Sourcecode’s® business process management solution K2® [blackpearl].

Capacity and availability management has been implemented through a reporting solution on the basis of Microsoft Business Intelligence products.

The operations portal is also designed as a centralized document storage system, with facilities to quickly locate stored documents. Metadata added to documents provide for this feature. To ensure quality, integrated workflows support document managers in regularly reviewing the data to ensure it is current.

Reliable capacity and availability management of existing, and required, capacities and resource workloads is of paramount importance to T-Home Entertain. Regular and targeted automated availability and capacity reports of several hundred servers stored on the portal helps to achieve this.

Robust security features minimise risk. T-Home Entertain integrates reports on planned releases and application deployment with release management.

The Release Management Tool is one of its core applications. It supports life- cycle monitoring of releases and the planning of various IT services rollouts. For example, planning data is exported to a Microsoft Excel® calendar and generates separate reports.​

Results

​The successful implementation and deployment of the platform provides the Products & Innovation division of Deutsche Telekom with a high performing and scalable operations portal, a central source of information and process support for its employees.

Efficient and cost-effective operation:
Virtualization of the operations portal’s structure provides an efficient and cost-effective solution. Application, integration and acceptance tests can be performed in a test and preproduction environment, enabling the rollout of software ready for use.

High user acceptance:
Employees high level of acceptance is a direct result of the simple and intuitive handling, as well as, adapting the platform to the corporate design of Deutsche Telekom.

Faster response to changing customer needs:
The Release Management Tool allows releases generated by different departments to be centrally managed. This ensures the optimum usage of resources and reduces the time-to-customer.

Shorter processing time:
The implemented workflows enable a uniform procedure and, therefore, considerably shorten processing time. The system runs periodic system checks, the results, of which, are recorded. Status and key figures become apparent through the evaluation of workflows.

Integrated applications:
The capacity and availability management solution for T-Home Entertain provides capacity and availability reports for hundreds of servers. It enables detailed and forward looking capacity planning and prevents bottlenecks in product availability. Reports provide for a continuous optimization of resources and processes by indicating deployment windows.

Simpler collaboration:
The operations portal and its search engine deliver a much better organization and/or much faster location of resources necessary for operation. The document related workflows support the continuous improvement of quality and up-to-date information.
