Harman International began to investigate alternatives to its existing Oracle platform for increased total cost of ownership for its SAP R3 system. The organization worked with Accenture and Avanade to evaluate 5-year TCO for SAP systems running on a HP-UX/Oracle platform and a Windows/SQL Server platform.

Solution
The Accenture and Avanade team conducted a thorough Total Cost of Ownership assessment to identify potential savings by migrating the customer’s SAP system to the Microsoft Windows and SQL Server platform.

Results
The Accenture and Avanade team identified $500,000 or 7% cost savings over 5 years by migrating the SAP R3 version 4.6 system to the Microsoft Windows/SQL Server platform. Specifically, the team identified 80% reduction in OS costs and 46% reduction in DB costs as a result of migrating to SQL Server.
