Company Description
Itella is a service business whose core competence lies in information and product flow management for its key customers. In Finland, Itella’s key mission is to provide daily mail services nationwide.
Business customers account for approximately 96 per cent of the net sales. Itella’s key customer industries include the media as well as the trade and services industries. Itella operates in Europe and Russia; the share of international business is one third.
Net sales amounted to EUR 1,842 million in 2010. Itella provides work for around 29,000 professionals. Itella is wholly owned by the State of Finland.
Itella Group comprises three business groups: Itella Mail Communications, Itella Information and Itella Logistics.

Global intranet renewal: one global intranet with profiling and team sites

Business Situation
Itella was faced with an existing intranet that was fractured and did not fulfill the needs of a modern, international company. There were many local intranets and parallel systems in use and usability was poor for both editors and users. In addition, Itella was lacking social media tools in internal communications.
Solution
Avanade and Accenture defined a new global social concept. The solution was based upon Microsoft Sharepoint® 2010 including publishing, team sites, people profiles and search. As part of this process, content targetting is based on profiles and interests.
Results
Today, Itella has a sophisticated intranet solution, based on a global system that links countries and business groups. User adoption has been a success, as content editor are very satisfied with enhanced publishing tools. Interaction and dialogue across organization has improved due to the social tools such as blogs and discussion elements. In addition, the team sites have been well adopted: during the first year around 300 have been established.

Overall we are happy with the intranet solution, as we have been able to achieve our key objectives: one integrated, easy-to-use global intranet that is enabling knowledge sharing, interaction and collaboration.
