Modern Muse is a nonprofit organisation that gives girls unprecedented access to female role models, or “Muses”, through its programs and digital platforms. Its website was originally built using open-source technologies. As its popularity grew, so did user demands. However, its existing technology could no longer keep up with the rapid deployments needed to accommodate expanded outreach. When Microsoft decided to become Modern Muse’s technology partner, it set out to transform the site by putting a framework in place to rapidly develop, deploy and refine its features and functionality using the Microsoft technology stack. This meant migrating the open-source system from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Microsoft Azure to achieve increased manageability and scalability.
“We are thrilled with the successful migration of Modern Muse to Microsoft Azure, as this move continually improves the experience for girls using the platform.”
This complex migration required a partner with the knowledge and skill set in both Azure and open-source technology, so Microsoft engaged Avanade to help upgrade the technologies. We began by assessing the technical aspects of the move, including authentication, privacy and accessibility requirements. Then, using our modern engineering practices along with Microsoft’s development tools, we made the final shift.
The new cloud solution offers Modern Muse simplified server management for enhanced performance at reduced costs, immediate access to the latest Azure features and improved site connectivity and responsiveness. It also integrates with third-party applications, further proving its flexibility.
Within days of its public launch, site traffic increased by 600% and Modern Muse now claims over 1,000 registered muses.
