The Avanade Intelligent Garden
The results are in and the judges awarded a gold medal to the first-ever intelligent garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025, the Avanade Intelligent Garden. Created in collaboration with Microsoft, and designed by Tom Massey and Je Ahn, the garden demonstrates how AI can support urban trees—vital allies in the fight against climate change.
AI meets nature at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show
The Avanade Intelligent Garden is designed to support the plight of urban trees. They filter air pollution, cool the air, support wildlife, and boost community wellbeing – yet they face immense challenges due to climate change. We want to explore how technology like AI can be a positive force to help support urban trees and their custodians.
Our journey
Garden designers
Tom Massey of Tom Massey Studio, and Je Ahn of Studio Weave are the design team behind the Avanade Intelligent Garden. They were awarded an RHS Gold Medal for the WaterAid garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2024. This, their second collaboration on a garden at RHS Chelsea Flower show, again combines Je’s architectural, art and public realm background with Tom’s horticultural and landscape design expertise.
Tom Massey, Tom Massey Studio
Tom is an RHS Chelsea gold-medal-winning garden designer. Tom has featured on BBC television programmes as a garden design expert and is a published author with his first book ‘Resilient Garden’ written in collaboration with the RHS.
Je Ahn, Studio Weave
Je spearheads the award-winning architecture and urban design practice Studio Weave. Over the past 15 years, Je has delivered an extensive number of community-led buildings and landscapes, public realm and neighborhood plans and art installations.
Avanade design and development team
Our Avanade design and development team draws upon a wide range of technology capabilities to design, build and implement the user experience and technology for The Avanade Intelligent Garden. They oversee all the technology in the garden allowing us to learn how to better look after our trees. Here is what you will find:
- Smart sensors: The garden uses sensors to track everything from soil moisture, air quality, and health of our trees. Even details like the lean of a tree or the humidity around mushrooms are measured.
- Digital model: All the sensor data goes into a computer model that spots trends and predicts what might happen next. It explains these insights in everyday language, making it accessible to all.
- Interactive experience: Visitors can learn more about our trees in the garden and interact with them directly using their smartphones. For example, you can select a tree and “talk” to it to learn about its needs.
- Powered by Microsoft Azure: The technology behind the garden uses Microsoft Azure to process data and run AI models efficiently. It’s designed to be scalable and sustainable.
- Eco-friendly design: The garden is built with sustainability in mind. The whole system is designed to use minimal energy and have a low environmental impact.
25 years of doing what matters
For 25 years, Avanade and Microsoft have joined forces to harness technology for real-world impact, developing solutions that truly matter. Now, as Microsoft celebrates its 50th anniversary and Avanade marks 25 years, we’re ushering in a milestone moment with the debut of the Avanade Intelligent Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025.
The Avanade Intelligent Garden in the news
Avanade will showcase their ‘intelligent’ garden at London’s Chelsea Flower Show. This proof-of-concept, will demonstrate how technology can be used to optimise plant care in the face of climate change.
