The following blog post was written by Avanade alum Ana Reynolds.
As part of Avanade’s culture of mentorship and learning, every employee is assigned a career adviser (CA) who guides them through their career, helping everyone at Avanade grow professionally and feel inspired, confident and cared for. Career Adviser Spotlights shine a light on Avanade CAs who go above and beyond for their advisees.
This post features Ana Reynolds, Avanade Nordics Talent Acquisition Lead, based in Oslo, Norway.
What does a career adviser do?
A career adviser helps identify skills and potential in you that you didn’t even know you had yourself while suggesting areas for development.
How many people can you be career adviser for?
I have been a CA for two years now. I started with one advisee, but currently I work with eight people.
What’s the most important in this role?
You have to have a passion for people and people’s success. If you don’t want to make people great achievers, you should not be a CA. You also have to possess empathy so you can understand people’s reasons, challenges and motivations. It is about listening and understanding, not answering.
Moreover, you have to be fair and suggest areas of improvement as much as you highlight the areas where your advisees exceed expectations. Follow up people’s progress and elegantly retire if you believe the CA relationship is not beneficial for both.
What do you get out of the role personally? Why are you doing this?
I am genuinely interested in people. I love to help people achieve success by motivating them and challenging them to deliver their very best.
Do you have a nice story of how your support has helped someone in their career?
Yes, I have several happy stories! My favorite one is when I once hired someone to learn from me and shortly after, they became much better than me in the role 😊. I also love when my help makes people happier, not only professionally but also personally.
