Navy Federal modernizes its SharePoint platform, upgrading and improving business continuity

Business Situation

Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) strives to be the preferred financial institution for members of the military and their families, no matter where they are. NFCU realized its legacy document share system had outgrown its original purpose and was unable meet the increased content management demands to support NFCU’s growth. The credit union faced multiple performance issues that impacted employee productivity and service reliability. The platform was also out of mainstream support—a concern for a mission critical platform. Taking these considerations into account, NFCU realized that modernizing its Microsoft SharePoint collaboration and document management platform would give employees greater speed, flexibility and access to information while helping ensure its availability at all times.

NFCU teamed with Avanade, leveraging our deep delivery capabilities, experience with migration and technical knowledge, to re-architect its platform and migrate content, raising visibility across the enterprise and building a foundation for growth.

Solution

Working closely with NFCU, Avanade successfully migrated the legacy platform to SharePoint 2016. We developed and deployed a scalable architecture with an improved disaster recovery process leveraging new capabilities in SQL Server 2016. Once the new platform was built with a fresh brand, we worked closely with the business functional leads to ensure the migration of their content was complete and operational. New workflow automation was added to improve processes across operations, including finance and human resources. With the redistribution of content, we also relaunched enterprise search capabilities and created a central search location to help users locate information faster.

In addition to ensuring NFCU’s valuable content was delivered to the new SharePoint platform, our migration approach allowed NFCU to remain operational during the cut over period avoiding any interruption or availability of the platform. This was critical to support NFCU member service operations which rely on SharePoint to assist its clients.

Results

Along with new design and functionality features, the upgraded SharePoint 2016 platform is helping NFCU scale to enterprise standards to allow for future growth. And the redesigned disaster recovery capability helps ensure that customer service and other businesses will continue to function within minutes after a failure. NFCU now has the modern digital business platform it needs as it strives to become the preferred financial institution for the families of our armed services.
