Integrating processes means shaving critical seconds for Lotus F1 Team

Business Situation

For Lotus F1 Team, a Formula 1 racing team, assembling and reassembling 30,000-part race cars--as rapidly as possible--is the nature of the business. When thousandths of a second separate winning race cars from also-rans, finding speed and efficiency is a top priority. With IT spend representing 10% of the Lotus F1 Team's budget, the team sought to streamline, integrate and maximise its technology processes. Another critical priority was to more efficiently capture and synthesise post-event data, letting the team leverage track conditions, results from trials and previous race results in designing the best possible car. Finally, the team wanted to capture time, particularly time for its designers and engineers, freeing them from mundane tasks so they can spend key hours working to improve the car's design. Every step of the way, capturing time and shaving seconds helps Lotus F1 Team deliver a fast car to the track.

"Avanade has introduced solutions to reduce lead times and boost productivity – allowing our people to focus on the creative art of their jobs."

Avanade Added

‚ÄčAlthough Lotus F1 Team engages in the relatively unique business of Formula 1 racing, Avanade recognised that the team wasn't drastically different from a manufacturing or research-based client. For many businesses, seconds are critical. So, to kick off this multi-year engagement, Avanade delivered some immediate improvements to help capture time and increase speed. First up was help with Lotus's agile scrum implementation and software development lifecycle. The design office was next, with the combined Lotus and Avanade team working to streamline multiple design processes. Finally, the team worked to more efficiently capture data collected both trackside and in testing.

How it works

With tighter processes for developing software, the team was able to develop 46 application releases in time for the season's first race--its fastest application production rate ever. The more seamless integration of applications has helped the aerodynamics design and manufacturing teams  break down borders -- redeploying administrative  man-hours to implementing new concepts and building every possible performance into the car. By retooling design processes, the team saved more than 200 man-hours of design time. Dramatically increased speed around post-event data gathering has lead to a “seismic shift” for the Lotus F1 Team. A 75% reduction in processing time was achieved thanks to the single source of data that delivers an overall view to the entire team.
