Homecoming: I missed my colleagues and complex assignments

I missed my colleagues and complex assignments

After being away from Avanade for nearly 2 years, I decided to come back. I missed the consultancy life, complex assignments and my colleagues.

In “Homecoming” we tell the stories of Avanade “boomerangs”: employees who left the company for other opportunities before returning. Careers are long and winding, and personal and professional aspirations vary from person to person. It’s natural for people to want to branch out, but wherever you go and whatever you do, there is always a home for you at Avanade.

Left to join a smaller party

After 4,5 years at Avanade I decide to leave. I was excited to join a specialist company that had great staff with a deep technical skillset that was at the core of the company’s reason to exists. To work in such a challenging environment with the full broadness of the technology was heaven to say the least.

In my new role I was able to find the challenge that I was looking for. Though being specialized, it soon got repetitive and I found out it lacked the process complexity that consulting always had. The biggest lesson was that the most complex issues were easier to prevent than solve, so a lot of my time, being the least technical skilled of the team, was tracing processes and identifying bottle-necks and problem areas with as goal to prevent problems. I was being more productive than I could have ever imagined by not coding.

However still seeking the project complexity, I joined a smaller BI-consulting. There I mostly enjoyed the times as functional consultant. However, due to the specialized character and size, it required me to fix a lot of specialist work. Work that at Avanade I would just have called a colleague to get the head start…

I started to miss my colleagues at Avanade

While getting all technical challenges,  I started to realize that the team spirit of Avanade is a great asset. I started to miss the consulting life, the more complex assignments and having good friends and old colleagues at Avanade. So the decision was easy to make.

After being away for nearly 2 years, I came back in the same role, but on a different level and with a different focus for myself. Away from the technical details and on the process-level; how does the technology impact the people using it? These changes are minor to some, but they helped me grow as a professional.

Homecoming: Bas

Back home

While being away, from the enterprises, I learned a lot on how different companies operate. It is good to be back. The customers demand more and with my colleagues I can succeed in different roles. Roles that I wouldn’t be able to do on my own.
