Seattle Goodwill’s modernised business operations mean more time to help community members succeed

Business Situation

Seattle Goodwill (SGI) is a nonprofit that helps community members grow their job skills and educational foundation so they may succeed at work and thrive in life. Its free job training and education programs are made possible by the generosity of thrift shoppers, donors, volunteers, and community partners.

SGI’s thrift business relies on a donation-based model that requires the daily processing of thousands of used, donated items for its income stream. These items must be identified, ranked and entered into an inventory system for immediate sale at 27 retail outlets in five counties.

However, SGI’s aging business systems, comprised of disconnected solutions supported by manual processes, resulted in more time spent on operational management and support cycles and less time interacting with customers and raising revenue.

Solution

SGI is working with Avanade as part of Avanade and Microsoft’s Technology for Social Good program. Through this initiative, Avanade – the leading digital innovator on the Microsoft ecosystem – and Microsoft Technology for Social Impact, advise nonprofit organisations and the social sector on the right technologies to operate in the digital world.

Avanade’s Digital Innovation Studio engaged with SGI to build a proof-of-concept (PoC) application for inventory receipt, a critical workstream, using Microsoft PowerApps. Based on the successful PoC, Avanade and SGI are now working together to modernise the organisation’s ERP system to improve the efficiency of its back-office functions as well as staff performance and development.
