Martin Luther King Jr. Day community service

The following blog post was written by Avanade alum Donald Scott II.

“Princeton in the nation's service and the service of humanity”

This is the informal motto of my alma mater and an ideal I strive to achieve with everything I do. As we aspire for excellence in our day to day lives, it is important to remember that service is the highest work. What we do for others is a reflection of our character and should serve as the foundation of our ideals.

In the United States and all around the world, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr is remembered most for his service to humanity. We honor his legacy by celebrating his birthday and calling attention to the sacrifices made by ordinary people who worked with the hope that their action would make the world better for others.

Avanade actively encourages employees to be passionate about our work and our dreams. I enjoy volunteering with community organizations and in my local school district. I take pride in being a Career Advisor and supporting Avanade Gives, which matches donations from employees to organizations they care about. I believe that encouraging our friends, our peers and our children to be mindful of others is the best way to make a difference in the world and I am happy to work at an organization that agrees!

On January 19th, 2019, my colleagues and I had the honor of representing Avanade and Accenture at the MLK Jr. Day of Service hosted by the United Way for Greater Austin. MLK Jr. Day of Service is a national initiative to strengthen communities, bridge barriers between different groups of people, create solutions to our social problems and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

Thousands of individuals around the U.S. honor Dr. King’s legacy on this day by participating in volunteer projects that encourage community collaboration and make our towns a better place to live. It was a great day to donate hours to the community, spend time with friends and family, and share our passion for making the world just a little bit better. We were reminded that not every community receives the love and attention of our own, and that we can make a difference by helping to keep Austin beautiful.

I’d like to give a special thank you to Avanade, Blacks @ Avanade and the Accenture AAERG for working to create a space where diversity is celebrated and inclusion is prioritized. I look forward to the many service opportunities that the future has to offer and working with my colleagues to serve others and improve the world.
